ABOUT COINS AND MAGIC:

DO YOU KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND A COIN?

We handle coins all the time, but do we know the names

of the parts of a coin?

HOW IS A PENNY DIFFERENT THAN OTHER COINS?

Other than the fact that the penny is copper plated, the most

interesting difference is that the presidential portrait on the coin

is facing to the right.

All other U.S. coins show the presidents facing left.

Why is that?

Lincoln was the most photographed president in history at the time.

The sculptor based the penny on a popular 1864 photo of Lincoln,

and he was facing to the right.

As chance would have it, the other U.S. coins were designed

with sculptures based on left-facing illustrations.

Currently, many quarters are now minted with a left-facing Washington,

and nickels display a front-facing Jefferson.

WHO WAS THE GREATEST COIN MAGICIAN?

Though it is hard to narrow it down to just one name,

perhaps the most celebrated and legendary coin magician was

T. Nelson Downs (March 16, 1867 – September 11, 1938)

Known as the King Of Koins, Downs was a superstar on stage.

A master manipulator, he could palm up to 60 coins at a time.

One of his most famous tricks was MISER'S DREAM, where he seemed

to pull countless coins out of thin air.

MISER'S DREAM is still performed today.

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR COIN TRICK?

The quarter produced from behind a child's ear is probably

the most performed coin magic trick! :-)

Requiring some simple sleight of hand, that is the trick

that is most used in movies to convey

that a character is an amateur magician.

However, if you are talking about the most popular commercial

magic effect, we'd have to say the Scotch and Soda trick.

AN INTERESTING MAGIC COLLECTIBLE!

Specially-minted tokens or coins were a popular promotional item

used by many famous magicians in the early-to-mid 20th century.

Some magicians who specialized in manipulations actually used them in their performances, and gave them out as souvenirs.

Other performing magicians sold them to fans and collectors.

Still other coins were used by magic shops and magic

manufacturers as promotional items.

These coins are very collectible, and some are extremely hard to find.
