PATTER
The dialogue used in the performance of an effect.
Probably the most important part of your performance!
Good "patter" is what turns an ordinary trick into a memorable one.
Sometimes the patter is built into the trick,
as with the card effect
called SAM THE BELLHOP.
But most of the time, it is up to you to develop a script
that is smooth, entertaining and sounds natural.
How do you achieve that?
Practice.
Practice talking through your routine.
Even if (ESPECIALLY if) you are all alone.
The more you get used to talking through your routine,
the more natural you will sound to your audience.
We know a famous magician who practices new
routines
by reciting them in front of his dog.
He says if the dog stays for the whole routine,Â
he knows he's got the patter down PAT!
