The idea of a "Masked Magician" character is not new.
A Peruvian-born illusionist had great success in France in the late 1800's performing as L'Homme Masque, or "The Masked Man". Jose Antenar de Gago not only wore his mask during his performances,
but he always appeared disguised in public as well.
And William Ellsworth Robinson disguised himself so well as an Asian man that when he was shot and killed onstage on March 24, 1918
the public was more shocked by his real identity
than by his gruesome demise.
