OUT OF A HAT
The seemingly impossible production of many items
from an ordinary item-
a single hat.
Most 20th century stage magicians used this routine,
and it became an expected part of a magician's show.
Hartz's "Devil of a Hat" routine and Thurston's "All Out of a Hat" were particularly spectacular productions
Many times, the magician would borrow a gentleman's hat from the audience, making the trick seem truly impossible and impressive.
When fashion changed and men no longer wore hats,
the effect lost a lot of its WOW factor.
Still frequently used today, the hat is more of a prop
rather than an "ordinary object".
